Description

This installment in Doug Hubbard’s successful “How to Measure Anything” series is based on the methods described in his book, The Failure of Risk Management: Why It’s Broken and How to Fix It. This training will reveal how quantitative methods, using prepared spreadsheet templates, can be applied to even the most difficult measurement problems in Enterprise Risk Management. Douglas Hubbard will describe how to use his methods to measure any intangible, think of risk like an actuary, and look at ERM decisions in a quantitative way that is proven to improve decision-making performance.

The material is designed for risk managers and any analyst or decision maker responsible for creating, reviewing, or acting on business cases or performance metrics. The session consists of core topics and optional topics as follows.

Core Seminar Plus Content: The following topics are included in the standard version of the seminar (1.5 live days, .5 asynchronous day).

Asynchronous Calibration Training: HDR will teach the techniques behind subjectively assessing the probability of uncertain events and the ranges of uncertain quantities. This is an essential skill for anyone who needs to consider chance in decisions. Participants will see their skills measurably improve during the training with a series of “calibration exams.” Participants will also learn some of the techniques involved in training others to be calibrated. This training is completed asynchronously on our new, fully on-demand Calibrator Portal before the Seminar Plus begins.

Day 1 (am and pm): Executive Overview and Hands-on Analyst Training

  • Understanding what’s wrong with current “measurements” like risk matrices
  • Thinking about measurement and risk more like a scientist and actuary
  • An introduction to decisions under uncertainty and quantifying risk tolerance
  • A brief introduction to Monte Carlo Simulations
  • Evaluating what to measure based on the Value of Information calculations
  • A few very useful statistical methods taught with simple “fill in the blank” templates
  • Making risk-return tradeoffs in decisions

Day 2 (am)Challenges/Solutions/Next Steps Workshop (CSN)

The objective of this workshop is to help participants identify opportunities to apply the methods they learned to specific ERM problems identified by you. The workshop will identify the appropriate methods for the problems and discuss how to get started on solving them. This module allows participants to see the practical applications of what they learned.

Additional Training Modules: Choose any one of these half-day sessions for the other half of Day 2 or add a third day to the event to cover all topics. $2,000/each

  • Live Calibration Training: Substitute this for the included asynchronous Calibration Training.
  • More Advanced Enterprise Risk Management Measurement Methods: Participants will learn additional methods for more advanced measurement topics for ERM. These include statistical methods for reducing expert inconsistency, conducting controlled experiments to measure, assess, and reduce their enterprise risk.
  • Additional Challenges, Solutions, Next Step workshop: Depending on how complex your problem and how in-depth you want the discussion to be, you may want to allow more time for the CSN workshop.

Optional Customization: Content may be customized for your areas of interest, your industry, and level of detail. Contact us to discuss the scope of changes and customization effort and costs.

Considering the remote option? These training blocks can be delivered via  HDR’s Teams platform (or your company’s platform) over the course of consecutive days or spread out over a few weeks. We are happy to design the delivery timeline based on what works for your team and environment.
